“I’ve been having guitar lessons with Karl for a few years now. Having a personal tutor helps you move forward at your pace without getting overwhelmed. For me this is where having a personal tutor for guitar is an essential complement to all the other learning resources out there. I’ve learnt there’s no single right way - so having someone to talk to and help you focus on what you need to to to build towards your ambitions is a great idea My lessons are tailored to how I learn - building my understanding so that even the complex ideas can be linked back to simple things. And it's always built around learning new music. No matter how much I’m finding something a challenge, the lessons always leave me feeling positive about moving forward.”

“I had been playing for a couple of years before I met Karl. I had only progressed as far as knowing a few chords. I wanted to play a tune all the way through! Karl took me through the basics and using simple chords to play whole tunes. As our lessons went on, we progressed to more complicated chords, different strumming patterns, more interesting songs, and, surprising to me, I also learned the music theory and background as we went along. I have learnt so much from Karl and can now play many songs all the way through, even if my singing hasn’t improved!”

“I’ve been having weekly on-line lessons with Karl for about two years, starting as a complete novice at the age of 56. I love the flexibility of on-line learning, and the challenge of learning new songs and techniques. Karl is a great tutor, very patient and allows you to learn at your own pace while providing excellent coaching and feedback. I am amazed at how far I have come especially as I had zero musical experience. I now own three guitars, a ukulele and, as yet, an unused banjo!”

“I have been having guitar lessons with Karl for several years now, starting in person and then moving to virtual (Skype) lessons when the pandemic arrived. Karl’s knowledge of a wide range of music genres, from both a theoretical and practical perspective, is remarkable, and is matched by the energy and enthusiasm he brings to teaching. Because of the breadth and depth of his musical background, Karl is able to tailor his lessons to match the interests and aspirations of the student. I appreciate being able to regularly cover aspects of technique, different playing styles, and various genres as well as some theory; in addition to fitting with my interests, the variety of content is helping me to progress as a more well-rounded guitar player. Karl’s ability to spot errors/deficiencies in technique, to skilfully demonstrate how things could or should be done and to recognize when sometimes things might be (currently) too difficult for me, help to ensure that I focus in a way that helps me improve. His recommendations for guitar players and music to listen to help to inspire me further. Most importantly, this is all conveyed in a positive and enjoyable style that reflects Karl’s evident love of music and joy in conveying this to his students.”

“I came to Karl as a ‘proficient amateur’ having seen him playing Jazz guitar in a band at a music festival. His versatility is amazing and he is truly superb guitarist. I wanted to get more into Jazz improvisation and he recommended trying some Bluegrass. Seemed strange, but as he pointed out there is a lot of overlap in different styles. It was fun and certainly added to my repertoire. He sometimes took me back to remind me, or teach me, some of the basics. Other times moving forward with things I would never have considered. Karl can go as far as you want from amateur to professional.”

“Karl is a brilliant teacher and coach. His sessions are instructive and joyful. Karl has been guiding me for 4 ½ years, taking me from an absolute novice to a moderately knowledgeable musician. Karl has a talent for explaining things in terms that I can easily understand. His knowledge ranges widely and his lessons are always enjoyable. I thoroughly commend him.”
